Baffled too. There were other possible words before getting 13a, and it's impossible to decide which without a definition! The solution I've got is a word I wasn't familiar with, though I can guess what it means.

A pleasure: in return, could you give me hint for 13a? It's my last one and I'm stumped. Assuming I have to take a letter from the middle of a synonym for 'deeds' but can't think of the synonym, and can't see a 5dn of 4 letters or fewer with either of my crossers

Take 'in' out

You need to remove the middle two letters from a word for "deeds". It is a 5d, but only when the locks are open on both sides!
