Raggedy, by my reckoning the 25 entry should include a 3 digit atomic number, I think the only one in the puzzle.

Thank you Sudokulover & Mersault. It was driving me mad knowing both answers were right but clashed. Bit unsporting using transuranics!

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that this is the first time in human history that the sentence "Bit unsporting using transuranics!" has been written, spoken, or signalled via semaphore code.

Note that I am hedging my bets with the qualifier "human" history. I suppose it could also have been transmitted with an Aldis lamp at some point.

Finishing this off is absolute torture.

I have 14a and 31a left. Can anyone please at least confirm that 1_833 and _1311_ are correct respectively?

I also don't see the parsing of 4a or 4d.

Yes your numbers are correct for 14a and 31a

The river is Italian and 2 letters - defn plants
Eye is the extra - disease (of cattle) is the defn

Sorry I didn't get the parsing of 4a or 4d either!

Many thanks, finished now. I was looking for a four-letter river rather than the famous one!

Both are compound anagrams - the presence of THIS in a clue is often a pointer.

Wow. Thank you. I have never come across that kind of clue before as far as I recall.
