Thanks Kilgore trout. It would have been a lot easier though if I had entered 4 down correctly. I am now feeling slightly paranoid and will have to carefully check every entry again - but that will be preferable to searching for non existing plants and rivers!!! I suppose the difficulty of this crossword is that the numbers create so many possible permutations for missing answers that you don't realise you have made a mistake until you actually cold solve the clues.

I think I'm finished... Can anyone confirm that 3d is 598310? It's an amino acid, but I can't parse the wordplay for this or 12a so I'm not sure my grid is complete.

Ah, of course. I had removed the wrong 'N' from the clue and was trying to fit N and I into PROLE. Thanks!

Thanks to everybody here I have a virtually complete grid but I am baffled by the intersecting pair of 13ac and 11dn. I can think of a couple of comparative adjectives referring to the size or the strength of a small person with the elements available here but I can parse neither and neither seems to help with 13ac. Any hints welcome (I don't understand the previous hint about 13ac). Thanks in advance.

Thanks very much indeed Kilgore Trout. I need to find a much better online Scots dictionary and I would never have sussed 11dn in a month of Sundays!

http://www.scots-online.org/ has a useful dictionary (BOSS = empty was in it). I for one would be happy to see a lot fewer Scots words in these puzzles.

And while we're at it, why is every single word that Spenser didn't know how to spell properly considered fair game?
