I was wondering about that! I too am puzzled why Chambers consecrates Spenser's dialectal spellings. A lot of the "Shakespeare" ones are just mistakes made by printers of the time. Spelling was very fluid in that period of British history.

I think setters tend to want to avoid them too but quite a few grids are so heavily constrained that there is often little choice but to throw these words in. Perhaps we should be grateful that spelling was so fluid given the number of ideas that might disappear without them!

Turast, at 4:51am ? You'll excuse me if I've kept you up to think of a reply, but if you have read the book you'll understand how absurd and futile any reply is. So you'll excuse me again for not going back to the previous thread to read it...

I finished this on Sunday after an almighty struggle to get the last eight clues, but I've been trying ever since to make sense of the title and have failed. Converting the title thematically doesn't reveal anything significant as far as I can see, nor does 'On' appear to be a significant thematic item. Does anyone have any ideas?

Dryden, the only explanation I could think of for the title is that it's a warning as to which letters of answers to combine into elements. There is an occurrence of 'on' in 'consolation', though the ambiguity there, as in 'chico' and 'coccal' is actually in deciding whether to represent C and O separately or as Co. So my answer is perhaps a bit of a stretch...

As stated early on - it's elementary my dear.
Having trouble with a clash at 25dn and 32ac. Confident with both answers but 25dn ends with a 6 and 32 ac 4th is an 8. what's wrong?

One of your answers should include a recent addition rather than the obvious.

I made the same mistake! Take the Hs together rather then h + s
