Could you give another hint for 24a?
Does it begin with M? Is "ache" contained within it, or is it removed from "Charlies"? The whole a synonym for comedian? (I assume you meant Chaplin not Chaplain).
All very perplexing! Is "expels" or "enemy" the extra word?

paves is what I had too. Vulgo is a word for popularly that may help with 26d. Reader is extra. Cannot get 26a. anyone any ideas for 5d?
