Thanks Les, very clever and great fun.
I got it all right eventually.

BTW We always had crumpets for tea down here in the south!

Although I didn't either enjoy or finish it, thanks for your efforts to keep us all entertained, Les.
OSLO was the ONLY one that I both solved and entered correctly first time - ALL of the others I got I entered the fodder rather than the definition!

The first I put in was ABLEST but once I'd solved PIMENTOS I realised my mistake. I worked out most of the others the same way.
It made it a double puzzle. Sorry you didn't enjoy it Chris.

Very much personal taste, rossim. I like crosswords where you solve the clue then enter it in the grid. I avoid the ones where solving the clue is only the first step - letters to be removed, misprints etc. (the closest I get to these "second level" puzzles are alphabetical jigsaws).

I appreciate that lots of people do enjoy the extra challenges, as evidenced by the well populated threads on the Listener and similar crosswords.

Nevertheless I can admire Les's tour de force in setting this puzzle.

Great clip, Syzygy: I'm not one of those 5 million who'd already seen it (on this link alone). Thank you!

Thanks, Les. This was a lot of fun- if evil. Stars for 10, 11, and 16a and 5 (brilliant), 25, and 27d.

Still not clear on wordplay for 24D.

Big laugh at 10A. Read TUBA as "instrument of torture". (-;
