13,22 is a Kipling character from the Just So stories.

Can someone help me with the wordplay for 17dn in the right hand grid? I've got the answer for the definition "hate", but I can't see why.

Thanks SL. I've had a look, but the explanation in AB is (to me, at least) inconclusive and not very persuasive. Can you offer anything better?

Yes Araucaria is that sneaky. 13 AC It is one of the modern novels (YELLOW DOG by Martin Amis), and it is also a Kipling character (YELLOW DOG DINGO) He combines the word LITTLE 20,22AC in the title of a Booker prize winning modern novel with a theological theme (same as elswhere, after all (s)he is everywhere)(20,22 AC) and the Dickens novel (22,20Down.

Be careful of 20,22 and 22,20down. If you have found your Dickens novel, then you will see that Araucaria has used the first word TWICE !...threw me for a while, so watch out.
