I hope you all have an enjoyable day today. I'm delighted to have brought up the century. I look forward to taking part in the CHF in 2011.

My last two:

2d, first part: Fiddle in melted lead, coming down on both sides - I have A-T-A-D-E.

4d, first part: Tiny creature, an island setter, entertaining somewhat calculated - I have A-I-A-C-L-

Can anyone help?

In Right Grid 2 Dn, the "fiddle" is STRAD, and it is included in an anagram of LEAD

In Left Grid 4Dn, Tiny creature is the definition, AN I(sland) setter= ME entertaining = including somewhat c(ALCUL)ating.

loved this but which is the second phrase after 1, 23 of the 9 linked double clues? And does that imply those answers should span the two grids?

SAVING GRACE
Yes can span two grids (number of letters & clue numbers decide where you put them). There is some "distraction" of the 9 things mentioned in the preamble.

Thanks all for the help with the clues.

We don't have Christmas holidays where I live, and I couldn't take the time off to try and complete this superb offering by the Monkey Puzzle man earlier. But, I've got it licked now and am again amazed at the breadth of the man's knowledge and the truly convoluted clue setting.

Wish you all a belated Merry XMas and a Happy 2011!
