I found it helpful to write out the endless chain as shown in the example and then ring the pair pertinent to each six-letter clue, underlining the one inserted. Then the alternation becomes clear.

That's the point - it is a circle just like the example. Therefore it doesn't matter where you start.

They can all be solved directly Neil...

eg 1D - defn is "trouble" - Culpeper relates to a concealed 6 letter word which links to another clue

Ahhhhhhhhhhh ixion,

So, without giving away an answer, "trouble"=
first letter S,
second letter T
and ends in E?
I hope I am right.
