Thanks Brendan - that's cleared up two of my question marks too (5d and 9a, though the "skill" is a bit loose for the first word in 5?)
I'm not sure of the first word in 13d. I've put in a word that I am familiar with, as a specs wearer, but I can't parse the first 5 letters of the answer I get.
Looking at it again, is the "period of over a month" a very roundabout way of saying "40 days"?

Hi Brendan, that definition is in Chambers, but in the app you have to scroll down to the entry where it appears with no hyphen. This puzzled me at first :-)

Chris, the period is a religious one.

Hi Chris, yes, 40 days:-)

Thanks Jono, that was well spotted - it was so far down I completely missed it.

Yes, just got there jono. Not impressed by that clue; even the surface makes very little sense.

In 13d the first word also means "matter" which I'm sure is just a coincidence but what are the odds!?

... to be precise, it means "a piece of transparent matter".

I don’t know where else to put a technical question, so here goes. For the last few weeks my iPhone has been listing all the posts in these threads in reverse order. So, first is last and next means previous. It drives me mad. Can you suggest a solution?
