That was definitely a bit of a 14th across answer, but largely enjoyable.

Well, I have a full grid and the fifth word entered as necessary. However, as I had entered two down clues as if they were the right length I only had 12 answers too short for the required entry. That has taken me hours to spot my error and my brain is frazzled. So the final steps, i.e. identifying the pairings, therefore the down answer to be highlighted and drawing the relevant symbol will be tomorrows task. Still can't parse a couple even knowing the extra letter.

Getting there, got 1st four pairings and the symbol, just a down answer to highlight now (ref my previous post, OCD took over!).

Struggling to make much headway. I’m confused by the preamble regarding the shorter than grid entry answers. For these clues, do the numbers in brackets refer to the actual length or the length plus a blank cell? Hope this makes sense.

numbskull, the number in brackets is the length of the answer in all cases.

They refer to the length of the answer but by looking at the 180 degree symmetry you can see that some will have a longer entry e.g. first two across clues (5 & 6) must be symmetrical with last two (5 & 6) so all these must have grid entries of 6.
