I'm not normally a betting man, but how about a friendly wager? I bet you ten (virtual) pounds that the fifteensquared blog comes down on the side of the newspapers rather than the milk.

Put me down for £50 on newspapers to win. The drinking bit includes the wanted word and has no other input.

Me too, it must refer to newspapers for the reasons given by terry.

Neato torpedo! A cruciverbal cockfight! But what if REDTOP is the grass? Perhaps the puzzler looks down his nose at it.

Aristophanes,
Peasant farmers in the mid-west (to quote you) may call it redtop grass, the landed gentry call it black bent. Your suggestion is about as likely as it is the answer referring to the Hawker Siddeley Red Top air to air missile.

terry: It was a joke, but one can't fail to appreciate your turning the use of alternative non-Latin names for grasses into a class thing. As noted above, I thought the clue referred to newspapers. I'll have to check the exchange rate before I place a bet, however. I'll make certain it has NO ISE.
