Zardoz - theview seems to be that 29d is pairedw with33 ac, but I can't make a pair of them. 33ac fits the theme.

We got out of sync. The "i" drug is also used to treat mice, as in the clue!

The last letter of 20d is not exactly a vowel.
Google that followed by "definition".

Leslie cryptically alluded to it earlier. Then it pairs with 33a.

Came the dawn! Thank you, Zardoz. I googled paper sizes plus the two. How does that link with the theme?

They're both paper sizes, but now can't think of how they relate to the hidden word.

Zardoz - if you go to this site now, you will find the Guardian crossword for Saturday.http://www.guardian.co.uk/crosswords/prize/25071, and it's one of Araucaria's jigsaws - great fun.
I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, but it hasn't turned out as a clickable link - sorry.

Zardoz, the hidden word is also an old paper size. After a while, it's easy to forget what you're looking for!
The best Speccie for quite a while, I thought, despite some rather tenuous connections between the unclued lights and one or two idiosyncratic clues elsewhere.
