Hi, unclued,

6dn is indeed REELING : EEL (= Lance, perhaps) inside RING (= group). The definition is “on the dance floor?”.

8dn is a three-letter colloquial word for person inside a three-letter word (reversed) for main ( as in the Spanish Main). The last word in the clue is an extra, the jumbled form being quite hard to find in Chambers. The definition is stays, which is a noun, and nothing to do with corsets. The second letter of the answer is involved in a clash with 12ac.

Thanks to both wintonian and dja for your help.
I am finding this puzzle a real struggle.
What’s the best way to get into the endgame (when I reach it!).

And of course I now realise (having spotted the obvious and re-read the preamble) that the T is fine but the I is the clash. I'll get there! I have to finish this just in case the Scottish sun emerges tomorrow ..

I am beginning to fear for my eyesight. No amount of staring has yet revealed the destination of the interloper. Any advice is welcome.

And then I thought how many of those thematic things begin with I and .... doh! For apprentice think young newsman (as an example) for those who like me struggled with 10.

Reynard - I hope I spotted that earlier on before getting 10dn - doesn't it go 'in the bag' as it were? Just below the city walls ...
