And just to add to my last, that figure of 6.0896 tallies with what keepatit has said in his comment at #67, and woodlouse and others earlier.

Thanks - my mistake. Maths was never my best subject. I guess that if I submitted, I would put the cross on the line....and hope for the best!

I've finally got an almost full grid but am totally flummoxed by 45a and 42d, I've probably made a booboo somewhere as usual. Any gentle nudge for either would be appreciated and - who knows - after a reviving G+T I might even have a look at this quadratic thingie!

Hi Planks.
45A common letters are every third letter in the first two words. The differing letters are added after the first common letter, one answer is a type of chisel (pl), the other a structural strengthener for ships or planes (pl)
42D common letters are or and bit of t(otty); Barbie is given in TCD as an Aussie term, so one definition has Aussie connection, the other is a Scottish word for a sulk.

Thanks Meursault, so simple when the light dawns. Having a seven year old granddaughter I was, of course, thinking of a doll rather than the Aussie connotation. In true 'grasshopper' fashion I shall now follow the instruction I have found and put my x's on the lines, thereby leaving no blank cells and be quite happy that I have absolutely no idea quite why.

Surely the diagonal orientation is 38a 'L' bottom left with 'R' top right and 5d 'P' top right with 'R' bottom left? Unlike the suggestion made in an earlier post.
