Thanks from this end as well Meursault. It's solved my problems in the SW corner, which means I've now got a completed grid - and it's only Friday evening. It looks as though Lofthouse and I both had GA N at 46a. It must have seemed plausible, but I can't remember how I got there.
Now back to that Argand diagram tutorial.....

For those still struggling to even get the mixed up words after a full grid, I found Orson's comment about the riddle very useful. Google found the material for me and the penny finally dropped. Local shop with paper opens in 37 minutes. Golly I hope its a wee bit easier this week!

What did I say?! G top right - R bottom left.

.....they would still have to allow G top left and R bottom right.

I think we'll have to wait until next March to find out the answer to that. Normally the solution would state that alternatives were marked as correct.

They must be equivalent. Both read the same way.

Yes, I fail to see how entering the diagonals NW -> SE, rather than NE -> SW renders a grid entry unreadable.

This note has just been added to the Listener Crossword website (in the Notes section for No 4501): For the cells containing two letters, it didn’t matter which (opposite) corners they were placed into, as long as the letters of each of the two entries, as well as ARGAND DIAGRAM, could be read normally, as stated in the preamble.

I'm glad that's been clarified.
