I did wonder about that but I noticed that there was a symmetry to where all the letter pairs went. It shows not to assume too much. Thanks.

Hi bunty

AA is volcanic rock. Lining hollowed out leaves LG.

I've solved all the clues but am at a loss to understand the three small numbers. Also the pairs of letters make little sense unless a town in Arizona is involved.

you should have 12 pairs of letters ... the 1st 5 give HENRY ... so then you can see what the other 5 give ...

I didn't use the connection to 3 small numbers but i assume it's 3,4,5 which you'll understand once you have the person and the message

Ah, I only had 11 pairs because I thought 1d was normal (which is why I thought 29d was normal). Thanks.

By carefully considering all of the posts this week, I have finally completed the grid and the requisite instructions. Although I have a mathematical background, I was not familiar with the originator. Thank you to all contributors and hats off to the setter!
