I'm afraid I'm still struggling. Please could I have a push about Rum old hospital.....

I'm not much further forward but I can help with that one Dylan. Rum as in strange and old hospital is a short form - think convalescent. The rest is an anagram of doesn't and d for dead with 2 letters removed giving a 3 word phrase for bits left over. Hope this helps!

In case anyone is misled by comment 14, the extra letters in the Edberg clue appear to be BV (for Bene Vale).
The earlier tip, I think from S_Pugh, to look for intersecting 7 letter entries (middle letter W) is a good one.

Correction - so that makes the extra letters V and N...

The hint from s_pugh helped me to start entering data and hint from son1 gave me the second long word and location.

Now I am stuck on 4 with several others solved but no idea of how to parse.

Wordplay requires two letters to be removed before solving.
The starting letter is one of P,R,S,T.

1. Ordered tonic water after dropping in briefly to bar

2. Ten years at sea must include shelter

3. Broke forth, rejecting the last resort

4. Digger checking rugby broadcast no more


I thought 2 would be an anagram of ten years with two letters removed. Nothing comes to mind for shelter, if that is the def.
