Many thanks everyone. Think I now have 3, 7, 8 and 17. Working on anagram for no. 12. That still leaves 1, 6, 10, 11, 14 & 16. Can't work out the name of the WW1 (as suggested rather than WW11) plane for no.16? Any more subtle clues please?

haeremai18 - No1 is anag + greek word - an EA river. In 16 you missed out the vital word in clue "arrived" - another word for and you are right about L. Like winnie still struggling with 24 - must be orinoco but why, or am I completely up the creak

Winnie and Bazza. I too have Orinoco for no.24 and also not sure why! Got no.16 now thanks & working on the rest. Does EA mean East Africa???!!!

haeremai18 not sure if you have 14 yet, but take be out of best,ultimately = last letter and think of a saltire. Whole thing is a mythical river

Thanks diday, got it but I so wanted it to be orinoco! Look forward to hearing from you all with the real quiz later in the year.
By the way EA is not east africa, much nearer home.

My thanks as well diday for clue to 24. I have it now. I too was stuck on orinoco, like bazza.
