Thank you Kilowatt. I must seem very dim. I did see Lossie but it was not listed in my book of river names.

River Lossie is in the North East of Scotland. It is supposed to be a good salmon river.

Hello bazza, I am still struggling with 24 as well. My last question to solve.
Still working on Orinoco.
OR = other rank. O for outside, but that depends on RIO being a province. and I'm not convinced.

Sorry re my last answer - I must be getting tired. I meant:-
NCO uncommissioned officer, O for outside and
RIO for province.

6. Independent Bishop got together with a cowboy to see the banker (9)
7. Alternatively groan about a place – for Catherine (6)
8. On September 1st a German with energy runs through Helen’s favourite city (5)- is this something to do with TROY?
10. Plain girl in Virginia has come back outside (8)
11. … but in Paris she pursued doctors to get a drink (7)
12. Ordering a wild flower that goes along the border (3,6)
14. Best be leaving before everybody ultimately gets cross- in shade, perhaps (4)
16. Early World War 11 aeroplane at the penultimate airfield (5) - can't get this despite the clues but presume it ends in L

Nothing to do with TROY.
Think of Helen’s 'favourite' rather than her favourite city. When you've worked that out the meaning of 'September 1st a German with energy' will confirm the name of the river.

And I can only think of one 6 letter 'blue' river - clue 3 - though I cannot make it fit the clue.

Think I may have no.3 although depending on how I work out different anagrams, I actually have names of 3 rivers!! However no.8 still completely baffles me. No idea what Helen's "favourite" is?????
