Anagram of loss or lose(another word for gain) with I (Italy) or
S or E (spain) doesn't work for me !!
Any more clues please ?

You are almost there. Loss, + I + E gives Lossie. A scottish river (Lossiemouth).

Thank you Kilowatt. I must seem very dim. I did see Lossie but it was not listed in my book of river names.

River Lossie is in the North East of Scotland. It is supposed to be a good salmon river.
