Hello bazza, I am still struggling with 24 as well. My last question to solve.
Still working on Orinoco.
OR = other rank. O for outside, but that depends on RIO being a province. and I'm not convinced.

Sorry re my last answer - I must be getting tired. I meant:-
NCO uncommissioned officer, O for outside and
RIO for province.

I am getting there slowly with and without your help - thanks! However really struggling on the following:
1. Banker has disturbing news with the letter that came back from Greece (6)
3. In a confused state, the bad aunt got rid of that blue flower (6)
6. Independent Bishop got together with a cowboy to see the banker (9)
7. Alternatively groan about a place – for Catherine (6)
8. On September 1st a German with energy runs through Helen’s favourite city (5)- is this something to do with TROY?
10. Plain girl in Virginia has come back outside (8)
11. … but in Paris she pursued doctors to get a drink (7)
12. Ordering a wild flower that goes along the border (3,6)
14. Best be leaving before everybody ultimately gets cross- in shade, perhaps (4)
16. Early World War 11 aeroplane at the penultimate airfield (5) - can't get this despite the clues but presume it ends in L
17. Hurry after Cape Doctor, for example, to get ship for Atlantic crossing (8)

Any subtle clues would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Nothing to do with TROY.
Think of Helen’s 'favourite' rather than her favourite city. When you've worked that out the meaning of 'September 1st a German with energy' will confirm the name of the river.

And I can only think of one 6 letter 'blue' river - clue 3 - though I cannot make it fit the clue.

Think I may have no.3 although depending on how I work out different anagrams, I actually have names of 3 rivers!! However no.8 still completely baffles me. No idea what Helen's "favourite" is?????

Helen's favourite has the same name as a major European city.

Many thanks everyone. Think I now have 3, 7, 8 and 17. Working on anagram for no. 12. That still leaves 1, 6, 10, 11, 14 & 16. Can't work out the name of the WW1 (as suggested rather than WW11) plane for no.16? Any more subtle clues please?
