@chrise & wally: strangely enough "u" in the sense of "for all to see" (quoted verbatim )also cropped up in the Spectator this week, viz.
"Flower left for all to see on stage" = L U PIN
--whereby I find the technical meaning of "pin" for "stage" even more abstruse for the non-technically-minded!!! Just goes to show...

You will have to explain "pin" for "stage" to me, please. I looked it up in Chambers and found, about half way through, "a degree, stage, pitch", but I can't think of a context in which this would be used.

Many thanks, Pipesmoker: it was not too hard but entertaining & original, the way I like them!
And to chrise: I googled & it got very technical: I certainly can't explain (was astounded) but it's in the Bradford's (red) dictionary too--"pin" for "stage" but not vice-versa!
