Finished this on Saturday, but still have a bunch of question marks. Agree with others about peterm's 49a (showoff) and paul's 4d, loved Lionheart's 5d. A few other favorites- will get back...

Oh! And magpie: "latter Beat Era" refers to the disco genre. Normally I wouldn't clue something this way, but this is a "work" that has frightening lasting power; it's still played at every wedding reception in the US, and I made sure it was a big hit in the UK.

Thanks Aristo, I did get the right answer and sort of made the disco connection. Early on though Gym Canto had me baffled.

31d now also understood...still baffled by 2D though.

I have a ? here too, ixion, and that's what I figured: that the president was besieged by the taboo synonym without the Ns but the A was missing from his name.
