Thanks Aristo, I'll struggle on with them...I suspect much deviousness on your part!

Finished this on Saturday, but still have a bunch of question marks. Agree with others about peterm's 49a (showoff) and paul's 4d, loved Lionheart's 5d. A few other favorites- will get back...
Oh! And thanks, phillip.
Oh! And magpie: "latter Beat Era" refers to the disco genre. Normally I wouldn't clue something this way, but this is a "work" that has frightening lasting power; it's still played at every wedding reception in the US, and I made sure it was a big hit in the UK.

Thanks Aristo, I did get the right answer and sort of made the disco connection. Early on though Gym Canto had me baffled.

I have a ? here too, ixion, and that's what I figured: that the president was besieged by the taboo synonym without the Ns but the A was missing from his name.

Thanks Aristo...I felt some kind of vague Olympic reference was warranted ;)

I'm struggling this month! Favourites so far include 33d (ixion), 34d (dja), 36d (magpie) and the universally praised 4d (Paul)!

Will battle on!

Mea culpa. I didn't notice the misspelling!

Perhaps this would read better:

2D No news, no answer, when president besieged by taboo, grows some “herb”!

I certainly messed up this month.

Don't worry Syzzie, can't do too much about it now. I will put a revised explanation in the wordplay file.

I'll post the solution and wordplay files later this week if that's ok with all of you guys.

I'm setting off to 'The Big Smoke' in 20 minutes, so won't get chance to correspond until late Wednesday/Thursday.

Hope you all have a great day, Les40
