52A is a reference to some recent British erotica, also very hot over here, at least with the ladies (?) 650+ requests!

Should have stuck to my original:
Botanist's garden is reactionary, but good for degree.

2D - think of "new", then 2 of them.
Children know what a taboo is.

The answer is also a common euphemism for that other "herb", which no president is likely to allow any time soon. (-;

ixion: The two clues of mine you mentioned use words with American spelling (not the actual answers but elements of them), but they're in Chambers.

Thanks Aristo. Now I get 41A. Have been dealing with one of those for the last couple of weeks. Keeps taking my parking spot.

I may have to give up on 12d and 20ac. I wasn't helped by having the wrong plural form for 9dn for some time, but even after altering it (and thus finding at least some words that fit 20ac) I can't decide on an answer.
I'll put it aside for a bit and turn my attention to today's Guardian instead.

...and to Chris:for 12d think anag. of 2 words in clue,def. is at beginning.
For 20a:I'm not sure how to parse it myself, but I thinkthe last 5 l. refer to a kind of wind; my answer seems to have been accepted by Les.
Apologies to dja. & Syz. if I "trespassed" here!

Got 12 dn with your help, GK - it was one of my possibilities, but didn't understand the parsing. I was trying to fit SBS (for Special Boat Service) into it!

ixion: Also, for 41a, put comma after aitch-dropping, for 31d, put comma after arousing.
