Well, at last have just managed to finish - struggled with 20 across but now I have the answer I cannot think why... but isn't that always the way. I believe I have 21 down, but for the life of me I cannot see why. Can anyone explain?

angelmcm - not stupid. Just that sometimes we try to look at the clue in a more obscure way than it really is (and vice versa) !

It`s so easy to get bogged down. I was so sure
20ac was an anagram of `inner ratio` and had the last two letters of Fred`s name `er`.
Got up this morning and it was suddenly clear!
best wishes to all. M.

Not clear to me folks!! In spite of all your efforts still stuck on 20a although your hints helped me with 19 and 21d. Rarely complete this crossword but wont give up trying. I dont want to send it off for reward just like to think my brain is still working! Obviously its not - any further hints on 15a and 14d. Need to think about some of the other ones I am stuck on.

hello old gal
Have only just popped in before getting dinner. 20a is an anagram of 'equal' + ratio (ratio part being in the middle)
15a is a scrap (e.g. of material left over)
14 down is a breed of heavy horse.
(singer = a bird that 'sits' )+ on
Hope this may help a bit!
