Looking on my map, there is an Alamein about 10km south of El Alamein; it seems to consist of an oil well mainly though.

Really? And what map is that?
I don't see it in the National Geographic Atlas or on Google. How obscure is this?

Bottom line -- lame clue.

No not on Google - it's the very heavy Times Atlas of the World - comprehensive edition.

As I said, how obscure is that?
Just don't happen to have the Times Atlas handy.

I disagree. The word "work" doesn't even show up in this article, let alone "workhouse":

Anyway, I think the horse is dead. (-;

Bon nuit! Better puzzle next time.

I don't think workhouse has anything to do with the title. Did not nearly every town have one in any case?
See my comment on previous page.
Any better explanation welcomed!

Still can't see for the fog! Let's agree it was a pretty weak effort on the part of the setter this week --- unless of course we're all overlooking s'thing obvious, which I can't imagine...Thank God there's (perhaps) Araucaria tomorrow.....................

Finished this now at last. I've noticed, re the "workhouse" debate, that all the towns seem, also, to be market towns. Could this be relevant.....though I can't connect it to favelas. It may be simply that the word "shanty" is an anagram indicator and that's all there is to it!

Started this one late.
Stuck on last clued light.
8d Stout cane mistaken for parasol (9, three words).
I have ??TO???A?.
Initially, I thought it was an anagram of Stout cane but can't see it.
Is it an English phrase?
