Peter,
No - more a question of ecclesiastical etiquette.

It is a very Aracauriaish clue but not street slang, peterm. Think seashell for the answer.
End of pasage reads ......ten one.

I am still baffled by 1d - ship or shop??

Snowball - you don't close a ship with a key

Thanks. I've finally seen the problem - I had the wrong answer for 26ac. Incredibly, 26ac is another where a different word gives an entirely plausible passage.

Thanks AJT. Is the solution a type of soldier? If so, the final passage doesn't seem to make much sense.

Snowball - that's what I have, and read it, it does make sense

Snowball - if you put a colon or dash after the first word, it makes sense.

I'm still not convinced by 7dn. The obvious answer doesn't seem to me to give a sensible passage.

Thank you AJT and Peter M - so it does with a bit of punctuation.
I have a city for 2d but am mystified as to where it fits into the passage.
And I think I have the same as everyone else for 7d but it doesn't make much sense when put in the passage.
