darla - I agree about 11a being ‘a bit forced and awkward,’ and I don’t really see why ‘scientist’ wouldn’t have worked just as well for the purposes of the clue.

Morning, samuipete. On reflection I think it’s perhaps just that the solution is not a word that came to my mind as a synonym for the definition, though of course it is.

On 1d I'm reminded of a well known Disney character who was definitely a bit like the definition. I never knew what animal he was supposed to be.

All done. Definitely on the easier side this week especially for a Picaroon but no less enjoyable for that. Can't get past 29a as CoD. Thanks to Picaroon for some clever clues as usual and I learned some new words on the way. Not least the bird in 3d which I don't remember seeing before.
