My interpretation is that you are constructing a “tunnel” between the two things on either side of the tunnel, which, as I now understand, is central to the work in question.

Good thinking

All done except 1D. I have a figure (number) which fits the grid but can’t parse any of the wordplay. Especially the reference to Newcastle. Any hints?

I think it should read “fist couple from Newcastle” (reversed), coming after strong (in an Italian sense) with one letter for United thrown into the mix…

I think I have the answer and it is a number. In which (abbreviated) area of England is Newcastle? Gives the final two letters reversed.

Rather easy this, although I have no idea what words the thirteen letters make, nor the theme. But how do we enter the answers? Do we leave a blank in the relevant words? Also, where are the winners and solutions being posted these days?
