Hi Rburt,

52d/52a - the starting letter of both clues does not farm pert of the symbols in either - in 52d it goes after the first word but it's not plural so there's a letter at the end and, in 52a, the symbol goes after the first letter but, again, there are also letters after it.

Sorry if I've made a mess of that and made it even more confusing:-)

rburt 52a is an angram and does have a 6-letter substitution - as does 52d. I can't fathom 25, 27,49 or 61 ...

I'm also stuck on 49 and 61. 25 - not the kind of cricket that crossword setters usually refer to. I googled its features. 27 sounds like a 3-letter word followed by a 5-letter word, making the 6-letter answer.

21. anatomical feature of insect. symbol is currency.
27. sounds like scottish river and long jetties. symbol is greek letter.
49. "his" in stew is word for pot/drug. symbol is keboard.

61 is my LOI. grr...

I have solved a couple of the special instruction clues and have no idea how to fill them in the grid. I don't understand what he means by "symbols"??? I'm terribly confused. Any and all explanations will be received very gratefully. Thank you!

Imagine the answer to a clue was "IMPOUNDED" but the cell count was 4 - then, in the 4 cells you'd write "IM£ED"

I find Maskarade's crosswords extremely annoying and never bother with them.
Thought I might give this a go but having solved 1 across and 4 down and seeing that there is no way they fit together in the grid unless one puts in non words I am not going to bother further. A crossWORD should have words entered as the solutions imho.
