Smudgekent, the symbol is 4 letters and you're not a million miles away with your Batman villain in that it does sound like the kind of name one of the more whimsical villains might adopt, alongside the Joker, for example:-)

Had visitors so on my second shift now. If I have the right answer for 35a (begins with a) what is the symbol? I'm not seeing it.

And is 58a a straightforward anagram as it appears? I'm not getting that either.

35a - symbol is a number ((boat)crew)
