Hi Joe.

"King Arthur" was once the leader of the National Union of Mineworkers in the UK, born in Barnsley, Yorkshire. He is still alive. His 'finest' hour was in a battle against Margaret Thatcher (it's all been downhill since).

Oh brilliant, thank you. I only have four more to do now. I will tell you in case you have an inspiration and are not thoroughly sick of it!
Icecold logic helps him catch the criminals while we watch [4,5]
The lady with the enigmatic smile. Really [4,10]
As a measurement it can be decidedly shaky [7,5]
Daughter of an Austrian racing driver and car dealer who had a car named after her [8,8] I think this may be Mercedes Jellinek ?

Scargill is a hamlet in the North of England, not a town in the NE.

Hi Leslie.

Scargill is in County Durham, which I think is in the north-east of England. I agree it does seem a bit small to be called a town (despite having a castle). As you said earlier "Amateur-set clues can often be harder to unravel" (in this case not me but the setter of the local quiz).

It might be helpful to know the locality of the quiz (is it from Yorkshire?).

The clue was:

A local miner's town in the North East [8]

If you or anyone else knows a better answer to the clue, please help Joe & give a bit maybe?

Believe me 'n' it can be an issue, I do many from Scotland and they include terms unknown to a Lancashire lass.
