I think some of the clues are rather rude, in a cheeky sort of way.

Yes, I thought the range of clues showed plenty of imagination - and I thought they were all very fair!

Still stuck on 36a. Thanks to drxx@46 for indicating where the D goes in the clue, but I'm left with ES?E. The only word matching that in my old TCD is a labourer, and I can't see where to fit a D..... or is it another T.S.Eliot reference?

Hi PKA1. D added to the clue to make Rand. R for rand taken away from dress (groom) gives DESS. Add English to give DESSE, a Spenserian word for desk. Secretary can be a writing desk. So entry is ESSE.

Thanks Meursault, as ever. I missed out the 'Check Bradford' process, which would have helped, and spent too much time hunting for secretaries called Esme. All done, now back to the mess I've made of last week's.

Last one.

35a Positive eel-like fish are sole (6)
Have - LAN - A. The only word that seems to fit is PLANTA.

You are correct. P for positive. Lant is an eel like fish. A for Are (metric measure). Planta - sole (of foot). A non thematic clue.

Thanks very much, smithsax. Was unaware planta was the sole of a foot.

Jazzlover, I only knew Planta = the sole of the foot as I have several friends who've had Plantar Fasciitis, a very sore condition affecting the foot.

Hi Dryden, I appreciated your comment 80, and you're perfectly entitled to express you view. My own view was simply that a word in the wordplay can represent any of its possible meanings. So wordplay of 'x cleaved y' might be any of x divided by y, y divided by x, x united with y...
