ONLY a month left to finish this crossword!
Surely that's enough time to have a shot at it before asking for help! GRRRR

Mr Patient - the point about this crossword is that it is a kind of a "cult" crossword, and part of the fun is discussing it ith fellow enthusiasts who don't want to be given the answers, perhaps a hint, and fellow feeling along the way.

The light dawned on the missing letter logic. However I cannot figure out which of the four possibilities is missing in 24ac. Very good crossword I thought. Thanks to all for hints.

Clevertask - there are five possibilities! In a pack of playing cards, what beats the king?

Of course! I don't play a lot of cards, clearly! Very good. Thanks a lot.

I'm making some progress and I think I have 10a and it's significance.
Can anyone tell me if the 5 cards each 'appear' twice, or am I on the wrong track?

Hi Tony. I make it that one doesn't appear at all, then one four times, and three others twice each.

No, sorry for that . Indeed, each of them is used twice. It hasn't made any difference to my entries - or to yours I'm sure. It's just that I grew up with a different interpretation for 8 across! .

Hi AJT

Thanks for your help. You're very good at these tricky crosswords - the best on the site I would say!

Cheers
