That's what I thought, Smartie.

I still can't see how this is (approx) symmetrical, nor where the third fold should be.

I'm with demeter here. What smartie says is the first thing I tried and I was led to believe I should get a 6-sided symmetrical shape. But I get a 4-sided non-symmetrical shape.

Actually, I can see that there is a line of symmetry from the sharpest corner to the bluntest. But I spent some time every day trying to get a 6-sided shape after two folds.

I may be missing something. Where does it indicate that we need a six sided shape?

It's in message 37 on the fourth page of this thread, from smithsax.

I can see how easy the folding is now. I have been trying to get a symmetrical 6-sided shape after two foldings and then a thematic kite shape after a third fold. I don't like to bite the hand that feeds but I would have been deeply appreciative if someone had pointed out the error in smithsax's message.

With the help of you all, the grid is (mostly) done and the folding completed. But in spite of having almost all of the letters, I can't get answers for 25d [Loosely cover top line in poet's work] and 36d [Runs away from back of a trailing group and hides, maybe]. I hope that someone will be able to help and then I can get on with my life!
Thanks to all of you during 2017 for your help to a newbie. Best wishes for Christmas and the new year.

Thanks, gem94, I take back what I said. I can't have been reading the posts carefully enough later on Christmas day, for some reason.

Finished at last. This puzzle gets cleverer and cleverer the more you get into it. I wondered why the grid had been printed so small (to make room for everything else, naturally?) but now I see how crucial it is. I didn't get all the extra words in the down clues but I noticed that it's a 17 by 12 grid and 17 divided by 12 gives a good approximation to the square root of 2, which is relevant here.
