I struggled with this bit too. If you've worked out the statement you should have an idea of what to Google. I did and got into the right area but not specific enough to help. Later, whilst grid searching (using another part of the statement), I noticed 2 characters that couldn't be mere coincidence. Adding their common field of specialism to my Google search took me right to the place...... not sure I'd have got there otherwise. Having got that confirmation, it helped me close out the preamble.

Thanks, Mersault.

A tad obscure and characters 4&5 likewise?

I suppose one of the assumptions made by setters is that the solver has access to TCD and ODQ. I know some of the solvers who comment on this forum have been solving without TCD, and some without ODQ. But that does make the puzzles much more difficult.

Agreed that characters 4&5 are obscure, but having worked out what the shape to be highlighted is, then it's just a question of checking the various possible strings of letters.

Had a new bookcase delivered Saturday morning for re-decorated dining room - so able to retrieve 2 boxes of books from attic (been there for 5 years +) ... lo and behold they included ODQ... and they say “There is no such thing as a coincidence ...."

Demeter, ?? = EA; Lang's is correct. An earlier comment gives link to the relevant poem. For the names, begin looking at central column.

Thanks Meursault. Much appreciated as always.

I'm utterly ignorant about this theme. Could you tell me who Steel is? What's his first name?

Strange how some names pass down in history. I see he was thought of, at the time, as equal or a close second to the famous one, who most non-followers of the theme (which includes me) would recognise immediately.
