I've identified what has to be the loop (and numbers 4 and 5), but have no idea how it fits into the "stylised object." Know virtually nothing about the theme, though.

Stylised object is referred to in line 5. It is the instrument.

No 4 is from the same era as no 1, since there is no E at the end of his name. His first name was Allan. No 5 is contemporary, he toured England this year. No 3 might be one of 2, neither English and both world-renowned. No 2 might be one of 2, both English. And John was a no 2.

But that's only 20 cells surely?

That's amused me. It was my very same reaction. But consider 3,4 and 5 as an endless loop...

1-2 overlaps by 1, 2-3 overlaps by 4, 3-4 overlaps by 1, 4-5 overlaps by 2, then 5-3 overlaps by 1.

After last week's puzzle I was rather hoping for an easy one, but today I find myself by a 3-letter word of which I have 2 letters! I don't suppose someone would be kind enough to give me a nudge with 44. I'm guessing the extra letter is T, but am stumped by the answer. Log? If so why!

It was my last one, and I puzzled over it for a while, so I sympathise!
