I badly need help with 1d and 20d. Any chance of a hint ?

Sorry,Samovar - could you give the clues?

1 Down: Galway seaport may hoist chest full of metallic alloy.
20 down: Hits gay Johnny-raws? Ask to leave.

20 The definition is Hits. 'Gay' needs removed. A Johnny-raw is a novice, a newby, a ... Take off the first three letters, the ones that mean 'ask' (plead).

1 I think this is just a Galway seaport. There's a there's a three letter chest (in religious terms), with a five-letter alloy inside. (The chest goes up (hoist).

20 D is plural, of course - my earlier post referred to the single.

Glad I did manage to help - I think it's very hard to get the balance right, too small a hint is useless, too large a hint and you might as well give the answer!
