Crucifer, I never use amazon. abebooks has a hardback copy, VG condition, for £44, + £3 postage.

I didn't know that DJA, but evidently abebooks are far enough removed to have much more reasonable pricing, and better customer service...

I agree Meursault. I use them a lot. I got a pristine copy of JH Plumb’s 2 volume biography of Robert Walpole- all the way from Trinity College.

:) Some of my purchases have been ex-library copies from USA. I feel they are almost an enhancement on brand new copies. Always in good condition.

I agree with you all on this week’s puzzle, fairly easy. I had heard of both books so it was a very quick finish.
Just one query: I can’t seem to parse 33a, not that it matters.

Xij - a bongo is an antelope; player (as in bridge) S replaces his partner N with note TE. Not is extra word. Classically inclined is obsolete word aslope. Hope this helps!

Can never usually do The Listener, but after everyone said this was easy I thought I'd give it a go.

I've completed the grid and the historic illustration, all bar 34a. From the letters I've got (S?EYE?) it looks like an anagram of Dewey's, perhaps a Scottish dialect word, but I can't find it anywhere - any help would be much appreciated. Also, can anyone explain the parsing of 32a, thanks.
