Hi everyone, I'd just like to say here how much I enjoy reading all the posts, wondering who is who;, the banter really adds to the fun. Thank you everyone. And that one little query from me starts such a chain is fascinating.

Nearly there, but ... how does 28ac Seven old pounds for antique locks become sasses?

Have I got it wrong? I'm convinced it starts with SASS, but the next letter is doutbful, since I'm struggling with 26d) Seat deserted in cathedral city square. I have S _ _ ES, and think the second letter is E, because of SASSES.

An As, plural asses, was a Roman unit of weight, a pound of 12 ounces. Stick an S for Seven in front.

Thanks so much Malone. I learn something every day from you!
Am I right that 4d is a grain container, rather than fill as I had it yesterday?
