Obviously, I need to look again at my 17 D and 25D (not fully parsed). Surely Madam works in 21A doesn't it, Chrise? For 1 A and 1a think chess piece and anagram of last letters respectively.

Your 17d must be wrong - 4th letter not A

It's the first part of 1a I'm not sure about. Is it indicated by "from"? Seems a bit of a stretch; you'd need another word to make it equivalent.

For 1a it is not a chess piece but rather a chess move. Then it parses fine.

Not seeing that, jafo. I have the "large castle - king's away" giving my last 4 letters.

I parsed 1a as follows:
first 3 letters (away's first)
4th letter (abbreviation for large)
last 3 letters (chess piece minus r for king: I assume that the dash sign is the minus indicator.
