'From the hips = candid, direct' is a typical expression that I had never heard before - so my surface reading problem might also have a lot to do with language.

I'd always assumed that "from the hip" meant "spontaneous" rather than "candid".

Well, at least you had heard the expression Chrise ! These 'idiomatic expressions' complicate matters when I do crosswords.

I think the full expression is "he shoots from the hip", which means without taking careful aim. Les may be referring to another expression, though.

Excuse me Chris, another part of the clue was the first word "He" unless you can tell us how many more male Sinatras are world famous.
