Spot on, ab. Plus 'artist' could be regarded as having two roles: anagram fodder (its primary role, as you identified) and part of the definition.

Good evening folks, to say this was a difficult decision would be an understatement.
To begin I don't think the straight anagrams worked this time around (sorry) except Paul's belter(5).
Ginge's decomposing (3) made me chuckle.
After hacking away at the other clues I managed to get a shortlist of four which included Tatters (6), Mattrom (20) and Bbm's (23) but the one that was top of the heap for me
