I agree. The instructions were really confusing, suggesting that the answers gave the sequence. "Centripetally" should have eloped me though. But it would be difficult not to give the game away. Eight to do now.

Since the three letter words need to be submitted, I don't know whether the middle letter of one of those (you know which one) should an X or an M!

Good point James, I didn't think of the X and put the M but could be either.

You have a very good point! I went straight for 'X' - didn't even see the possibility of 'M'.
I think the 'X' is probably what the setter had in mind, being perhaps more 'kitcheny', but really both could be acceptable.

Well I guess one of us won't be winning the prize (not that there's much chance anyway) unless the editor decides to accept either - which, by the sound of it, we agree would be fair.

Character - trait OR other ranks - soldires - traitor? Blunt was a traitor.

Flower is best lead off - lower - a cow?
