I think it's MELL = M (married) + ELL (a small measure) which is a large fencing hammer in Scotland and also means to beat or ROUT.

Brilliant John (from Arran)

My first suggestion was beat but I would never have got to the logic of it if I lived to be 110.

A nice cuppa and MOTD now.

Blessings and Nite Nite.

Thanks John - are you sure about the ell element though? And what about Judges spare an OK neighbour (6), now m?????

Weld, v. t. [imp. & p. p. Welded; p. pr. & vb. n. Welding.] [Probably originally the same word as well to spring up, to gush; perhaps from the Scand.; cf. Sw. välla to weld, uppvälla to boil up, to spring up, Dan. vælde to gush, G. wellen to weld. See Well to spring.]

from Websters 1913 - gush/pour?

Thanks AJT, I just got back, brilliant. Teem gives T the first letter of Judges spare an OK neighbour (6). Could it be thinks?
I've only got a couple of answers so far in this crossword so need all the help I can get.
How about 1 Across ?
Bridge partners ask about bet - place tenner, vulnerable? (8, two words).
Remember the conditions at the top of the thread.

Thanks in advance

Hello Arlene - I've never done the Listener crossword, and after this thread I printed it, and had a look at it. "Thinks" seems fine to fit the "spare OK neighbour" but what about the change of letter? The only other 3 I got were 11, 29 and 42 d. Any Help? I'll go on looking
