phil535 You should be able to find 11 Ac, (2, 4) under the SECOND word, in Chambers. This will confirm the female animals for 8 Dn. For 12 Down you need to think of an extinct bird (3 letters) but an alternative spelling ...

Finally just about got there, with a bit of help from Kilgore trout's earlier hints. Final question from me and the wife, as relative newcomers to the Listener.

is row 8 column 8 a 'g'. can just about make the wordplay work (clumsily) if it is, but can't see what the word has to do with 'Bill's attracted by'?

Row 8 col 8 is part of 29a, not part of the "bill" clue.

if you mean 15d, it's TANE, Shakespearean (i.e., Bill) for TAKEN, attracted. TEA 'N' E, E extra.

Shakespeare is often "Bill" just as Spenser is often Ed, or, rarely, Eddy Baby.

Jackdaw,
22 - m(member) yos(sent back sauce) in(consisting of)
30 - Caron, it's another word for hacek, the inverted toenail accent.
23 - yen, but dropping the 'n', ads

Many thanks Meursault. I had thought caron was good but it is not down as a headword in my copy of Chambers. Will get the latest C (if they have got it sorted). Hopefuly I can now finish the puzzle.

Thanks Kilgore, I did mean row 7. I had tang for no particularly good reasons.

Good username by the way. Me and the wife have both read a lot of KV.
