Sorry, Rusty - I missed seeing your previous post!
I worked 3d out from the wording but I had heard of it before.
Must go, else I won't be back in time!

Hi, Rusty!
We had a lovely time out this afternoon.
It was surprisingly very mild and the temperature must have been mid teens.
The woods were glorious - beautiful autumnal colours.
I do not think that I shall get any further with my crossword .
Usually I do not like to give in...but I am disheartened today!
I am still awaiting my pet shop delivery.
Usually we get our stuff nearer to the 5 o'clock end of the run....but tonight we must be one of the last.
I hope we haven't been forgotten!
Is your son visiting you?

Hello, Elle,
Yes, my son was here earlier.
Brought me mince and tatties from the butcher!
Let us hope you get your delivery.
I am sure you will progress with your crossword now you have had a break!

Hey, Rusty!
I think I would like your son's butcher!
The meals your son brings you sound delicious.
My delivery did turn up fortunately, but not until 7 20 pm.
They were very apologetic about being late and then stayed for a catch -up chat!
Now, my crossword!
7d: Master cracking a clue that's cryptic on time for artist (6,5)
The answer is Claude Monet = artist (def)
Anagram of "a clue" + t + demon
But this depends upon "master" meaning "demon" ........
How? why?
It surely doesn't ?
Have I gone wrong somewhere?

Elle, one definition, in Chambers, of 'demon' is 'a person of great skill', so that seems to fit with 'master'?

Hello, Elle!
No, you are right.
As Malone says, a "demon" can be a "master" or a "whizz" at something.
Have a look at your Chambers?
Monet was a painter.
The meal will be great.
There was not much of a choice left when my son got there, but that is a good sign, I suppose.
Quite cold this evening.

I think that is a clue setter is using an anagram, then the letters needed should be in the clue. You can't get from "master" to demon using Chambers or Roget.

Hi, Rusty!
Now I had looked at my (sometimes unreliable ! ) Chambers.........
But of course I looked under "master" - no mention at all of its meaning "demon"!
But yes, I have since checked out "demon" and, as Malone said, Chambers does indicate that it can mean a person of great skill.
However, I checked both in Anne Bradford and she gives neither as meaning the other!!
So???
I know my opinion means nothing in the great scheme of things , but.........I am not happy!
However, diverging..........I like Monet very much and have spent a lot of time in the National Gallery looking at his paintings! and been to several special exhibitions!

Thank you, Malone!
It did not occur to me to reverse the search, and look up "demon"!
I don't like it though!

You're welcome,Elle. I've been caught out like that before, checking the wrong word. I don't like the clue much myself!
