Thanks both for your help - but I am still confused! Assuming that I have got the shapes right (probably a big assumption) can you please explain the shape in the bottom left hand corner. I have got:
FINE
TRGUS
SLED

Using normal Base 10 this gives 159 which is not a multiple of 13 and neither is its Base 13 equivalent. Am I going mad?

To clarify, saddleworthians shapes were not correct, and the best place to start is the top left. If you get that shape, then allowing for the symmetry, and accepting that the same shape may not have to mean the shapes are directly superimposable, you should be able to establish all 12.

Hi all. Most of the above has been very helpful in completing this but I have one query - I have an "ER" clash in cell 1C. I take it that it won't matter what letter is use as the difference between the letters is 13?

it will matter because your 13 shapes must add to 13, 26, 39, ..., 169. With the wrong letter chosen you will not have all 13 multiples of 13 in your grid - you'll have a duplicate.

Does the word "notionally" imply that the areas have to be indicated on the grid?

No, they are imaginary only.

Thanks KT. I'll work on that. Can anyone confirm what letter 14 starts with?
