saddleworthian,

Remember that all numbers (except the submission address) are expressed in base 13. So it's not the 10th letters, as such . .

Of course...thanks again

I now have the question, but not sure I can make sense of the author...?

Is the fourth letter of this sequence X or +? The former seems to be right, the latter more thematically relevant?

Saddleworthian, it's multiplication and the answer (thematically expressed) is to 'life, the universe and everything'.

Has anyone else got ANY idea about the thematic sequencing?

We appear to have everything else.

create 13 separate 13-cell sections that add up to 13, 26, 39, etc. where A=1, B=2, ... Z=26

Saddleworthian - you need to look again at your thoughts expressed in post 27, I think.

It would seem that you are correct Gem!

Apologies for my misleading over-confidence.

Thanks all for the guidance - back to the drawing board...

I take it that what is required in the final grid is clue answers with clashes resolved, otherwise why would the preamble mention non-words? But I was beginning to wonder, since it seems odd not to have a numerical grid since the crossword is "entirely based on a number."
